Ådalen 31

Ten people were shot, five of them fatally, in Ådalen in 1931

On May 14th, 1931, Swedish history was made in Lunde. Thousands of peaceful protestors marched from Frånö to Lunde in protest against pay reductions in the pulp factories and strike-breakers. On arrival in Lunde, they were met by armed members of the military. Five people died after being hit by bullets fired by the military. The event had long-standing consequences and lay the foundation to what is today called the Swedish Model.

The event is marked by a memorial in Lunde. It was raised on May 10, 1981, and was created by the artist Lenny Clarhäll from Södertälje. The bronze sculpture weights three tonnes and was cast at Bergman’s in Stockholm. There is another memorial of the fallen at Gudmundrå Church.
